I just came across a number of neat tools that you all may find useful or helpful.

5 Gigs Free Network Storage

Need some extra storage? Set up a free Xdrive account and use 5 gigs of network storage. You can drag & drop files to it, schedule backups and more with the full client. I just installed it on an XP machine and was able to connect and map a virtual drive that appears like a network drive in Windows Explorer! Like a thumb drive you can access from anywhere you have an Internet connection.

Juggle Tasks

Trying to keep track of tasks is difficult. RememberTheMilk is a free service that consolidates and distributes the list of things you need to do among multiple devices and people. Works with email, cellphones, Google’s tasks, and even lets you share/assign tasks with others. Perfect to help you get a hold on the things you want to do in life and excellent for a distributed team. Can even send you reminders of when things are due by email, IM, SMS, Skype or other means.

This is excellent software to help you migrate from an old machine to a new machine, or to help schedule backups. You can even back things up to the XDrive! Automatically backup files, directories, even entire drives! Karen’s Replicator copies selected files from one drive/folder to another. Source and Destination folders can reside anywhere on your network. Options include repeated copies at intervals as short as a few minutes, or as long as several months, copy only files that have changed, and the replication of folder and file deletions.

Reso is a unique little application that will create a shortcut to another program, and cause it to open at a specific window size. Say for instance that you need to test a web site in 800x600. Using Reso, you can create a Firefox or IE shortcut that, when run, will open the program at exactly 800x600 pixels big. Very fast, easy and free, and also very unique.

“The Photic sneeze reflex (also referred to as sun sneezing, photogenic sneezing, or Autosomal dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst syndrome (ACHOO)) is a medical condition by which people exposed to bright light sneeze. The photic sneeze reflex can also cause one to sneeze many times consecutively. The condition occurs in 17% to 25% of humans, with more common occurrence in Caucasians than others. The condition is passed along genetically as an autosomal dominant trait. The probable cause is a congenital malfunction in nerve signals in the trigeminal nerve nucleus.”

The Big Trak Homepage

The Big Trak is possibly the coolest toy that has ever been made. It was basically a programmable tank that you could set to follow specific patterns. Made and sold in the 1970s, I drooled over it in the Sears holiday Wish Book, but never ended up with one.

This site has pictures, manuals, how-tos and all other kinds of stuff you need to get your own Big Trak, and program it.

Mystery illness strikes after meteorite hits Peruvian village

So this rock falls from the sky near a remote village in Peru. Shortly afterwards, a strange smell wafts into town and residents start becoming sick; massive headaches and vomiting. Officials who were sent to investigate also became ill, having to receive oxygen masks and hospitalization.

So, is this a strange space-based illness that has crashed on our little blue dot, or is there a more terrestrial explanation? Perhaps the meteorite crashed into a toxic substance already in the Earth, releasing it into the air for these poor villagers to breathe.

The photo is taken at Princess Juliana airport in the Netherlands Antilles which is famous for extremely low landings. The traffic is bought to a halt when the jumbo’s land, people are known to be blown away from the engine backwash, airplane enthusiasts hang on to the fence or road-guard for support.

Check out the site for some videos where people on the beach are blown away by jets taking off and fly into the ocean!

Steve Mollman from Wired has up an interesting article about MIT research fellow David E. Stone who plans on using the Nintendo Wii remote to build training simulators within Second Life that companies could use to train and test employees.

Orkin, for example, has hired Stone’s firm to create training simulations, which might involve inspecting a house for moisture and heat sources or mixing chemicals and loading them onto a truck.

“This isn’t the kind of technology, or model, that this industry — or Orkin — is used to considering,” notes David Lamb, Orkin’s vice president of learning and media services. He’s working with senior officers in the company to build a business case for such training, and, given the potential savings the company could eventually realize across its 400 branch offices, “there’s a very high probability we’ll move into this arena.”

One of the attractions of Stone’s approach is the low cost. In Second Life, it’s relatively easy to build chairs, buildings and other objects for avatars to sit on or walk through. Tools like wrenches or manual controls are also easy to build and, with a little tweaking, users can control them with a Wiimote.

Pope Benedict XVI said the debate raging in some countries — particularly the United States and his native Germany — between creationism and evolution was an “absurdity,” saying that evolution can coexist with faith.

“They are presented as alternatives that exclude each other. This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such.”

He said evolution did not answer all the questions: “Above all it does not answer the great philosophical question, ‘Where does everything come from?’” Benedict also said the human race must listen to “the voice of the Earth” or risk destroying its very existence.

“We all see that today man can destroy the foundation of his existence, his Earth. We cannot simply do what we want with this Earth of ours, with what has been entrusted to us”
